Tool to build a photography web site?

A friend of mine asked me to take a look at tools available to build a web site that would present the work of photographers, something like Philip Greenspun's .

I'm a bit lost with all those CMS out there. Could anyone recommend a good one, where we can start small and add features later? I'd rather something open-source, but any suggestion much appreciated :-)

Thank you

I think was built from ACS by Greenspun. ACS has an open source cousin called OpenACS:

Check out .  It runs Scoop ( ), at least a heavily modified version of it.  I'm sure he'd let you use it, its all open source.

You could try which has been recently reviewed on NewsForge

You could also take a look at It plans to be open source but they haven't release the source code yet. If you email them it might speed things up. :)

My mate John wrote a really great app for manipulating JPG/thumbnailing and generating HTML indicies. It allows you to edit the EXIF info, e.g. add comments into the JPG etc. then extract these whilst generating HTML.

Thx everyone :-) Gallery is working more or less on my W2K test host (crashing sometimes). I'll set up Scoop and see how much work is required to have it just handle picture galleries off a web site.

Check out and open source portal.

It would be great to build such photography community into it.

I am actually going to build similar website - please contact me and we can see wheather we have similar goals.
