Need some kind of free Photoshop app

Anyone know of one?  I just need 1% of Photoshop.  Like making simple images, and adding a few simple effects to the text.  (shadows, etc)

I've only checked it out a bit on a Knoppix CD, but isn't Gimp fairly well reccomended? I have *no* idea if they have a Windows build though.

Googled The Gimp and got http://www.gimp.org and for Windows http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/. Should work for what you need.

Otherwise if free isn't especially important, ten Photoshop Elements for $69 (typically) can't be beat.

You may also be surprised how much you can get done with a little time in Paint, the graphic editor included with Windows.

The GIMP looks pretty ugly, but it certainly works, and the windows version is pretty stable these days.

As a programmer and non graphic artist, I find it a lot easier to use than photoshop too.

I love Paintshop Pro, been using it for years. I've got Photoshop too, but it has the most hideous UI.

You used to be able to get demo versions of Paintshop Pro on magazine cover discs. That's how I got it.

Paintshop Pro is very good, it has grown a lot. It's entirely scriptable in Python too (not that I've used this feature but I *plan* to).

Apart from The Gimp, which is great, I recommend buying one of those computer magazines that come with 2 or 3 CDs with a zillion programs. I got an oldish version (two versions ago) of ULead for free in a copy of PC Magazine. This programs does all what you want to do.

I loooked at the GIMP homepage for about 10 seconds, and then closed the screen.  If there isn't a 1-step "setup.exe", then it aint getting installed.  Anything that requires some kind of external installer is a JOKE.  These people "just don't get it"  Unfortunate, if you actually want someone to use your software.

Paint Shop Pro;  If you read the subject header, it contained the word "free".  I just need to do 1 thing, so not looking to buy an app. 

I downloaded Pixia. 
Loooks like it has what I need.  (blur and shadow effects)

If you only need it for a single use, you could always download the trial version of Paint Shop Pro:

Not sure what you are talking about.  Java on windows has a simple installer and it is possible to create installers of the sort desired.

You can also use Java Webstart to download, install and run an app with a single click in the web browser.

Java has other problems.  This isn't one of them.

The problem is the requirement to install a copy of Java in order to be able to use a Java program.

That is the same problem GIMP have, which apparently gave it a big fat X for the OP.
