Microsoft not a real software company?
This quote from today Joel's rant just left me puzzled somewhat: "I like the fact that you want to work in a real software company. I wanted to work in a real software company so much I started one. "
Someone cares to elaborate? ;)

When you do something for yourself, the way you want to do it, where you want to do it, it's 'real'.
Everthing else is just someone elses 'real' gig.

I think it's the reverse expression of a lovely compliment I was given a couple weeks ago.
The compliment? "But working for you wouldn't be working in the software industry." Same thing, just I'm seceding from the industry rather than kicking everyone else out.
Maybe you do have to work for yourself to work for a 'real' company, but that would be unfortunate. I'd like to think it's possible, for Joel to create that environment for other people as well -- especially since Joel's one of the people least able to live entirely in his world. He absolutely has to be involved in the translation between Joelverse and reality.
