Ghostscript/GSView.  Opens and displays raw Postscript files (not PDF) and prints them to non-PS printers.

Why free? I'm just curious - I second Winamp and IrfanView, but there are some inexpensive shareware utils I use as well (Ultraedit, Fineprint) and I really have to wonder why the absolute insistence that you not pay a cent for the tools you use?

...unless you're doing research for an article or something. :-)

Also it's easier to just download a free app instead of having to go through whatever payment procedure is needed. Hey, I wouldn't mind to pay a few bucks for a very small but useful application, just install some international eCurrency ;)

LyX has lately been extremely impressive to me.

not mentioned yet:

Xemacs
Itunes
Maxima

I'm trying out a shareware app ported from the Amiga called "Directory Opus" right now as an explorer replacement.  It seems nice, but I'll probably uninstall it when the trial period is over.

My open source software of choice is summarized here:

http://t2.technion.ac.il/~shlomif/open-source/favourite/

On Windows I also like to use the free as in beer but not open source WinAmp, FreeRIP, and other things I forgot right now.

Scite  http://www.scintilla.org
Great freeware editor.  Despite being feature rich, it is very light on resources so you can open it in a snap.

Ruby http://www.rubycentral.com
A good scripting language is essential.  Some prefer Python, but if your still open try Ruby.  You will either fall in love after 3 lines of code or completely fail to see the use of it.

Freemind http://freemind.sourceforge.net
Flexible mindmapping software which is a great way for taking notes.

A Wiki http://www.c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiWikiClones
I love my Wiki.  Its amazing how quickly all those tiny scraps of information flesh out into a significant personal or team resource.

Oh yeah, then there's the stuff on my server...

Wiki (Wakkawiki)
Forum (phorum, phpBB, a JoS clone*)
Blogger (MovableType, Scoop & I'm looking at Slash clones)
mySQL admin (phpMyAdmin)
e-mail (SquirrelMail)

Not much really, but there it is.

* Since you can't Google this one or look it up on Sourceforge, it's this ( http://www.johnsadventures.com/backend/DiscussionForum/APHPDiscussionForum.html ) and someone made an ASP one as well. Hmm, I guess you can Google it, JoS Clone turned up ( http://discuss.fogcreek.com/joelonsoftware/default.asp?cmd=show&ixPost=89361 )

PopUpStopper

Many good ones mentioned.

I can't believe Eclipse hasn't been mentioned yet, though.  I'm continually impressed by that project.

Dave's Quick Search Deskbar.  Yes, I know Google has one, now--but Dave's is so useful I don't see much reason to switch.
