Why free? I'm just curious - I second Winamp and IrfanView, but there are some inexpensive shareware utils I use as well (Ultraedit, Fineprint) and I really have to wonder why the absolute insistence that you not pay a cent for the tools you use?

...unless you're doing research for an article or something. :-)

Also it's easier to just download a free app instead of having to go through whatever payment procedure is needed. Hey, I wouldn't mind to pay a few bucks for a very small but useful application, just install some international eCurrency ;)

A good scripting language is essential. Some prefer Python, but if your still open try Ruby. You will either fall in love after 3 lines of code or completely fail to see the use of it.
