Why 'win'word and not 'win' excel?
Okie.
Just curious about this.
I almost always use Keyboard to operate my PC [Until I have to work in Photoshop & Flash].
To open Microsoft word, I put [Win Key] + R and type winword. [The MS Word exe is named 'windword']
But then why excel.exe is not named as winexcel? What about Access? [It is named msaccess.exe] and finally Powerpoint is powerpnt.exe. Why this incosistency??

I can, using Win2K. I don't even have to type in the double quotes around "My Documents".

Don't know. But maybe it's because Word is the only one of those programs that had a separate version that worked on DOS machines. I know Access and Excel have never had DOS versions. Not sure whether Powerpoint did, but I'm pretty sure it didn't. So 'winword.exe' may have been necessary to distinguish that version from the word.exe that was the DOS version. Just a guess.

I use XP now and typing 'My Documents' doesn't work. I don't remember trying this on 2000.

Win XP Pro.. typed My Documents at the prompt and it opened my documents.
I wonder why that works... seems rather odd.

Really?
It doesn't work for me and as of now it looks logical to me.
The mentioned programs are able to run because they are name of executable files which is in folder specified by 'PATH' environment variable. I don't think anything similar exists for 'My Documents'.
So my understanding says that it should not work and that is why I am asking for a way! And if it is working for you, please tell me what did you do with your default install?? I have a fresh XP install on my machine and it ain't working.

Yep, even I have moved and renamed the folder from default.
Just to verify, I even set the My Documents folder to default and it's still not working.

On my (Win2K) desktop there's an icon called "My Documents". In this icon's properties it says "The My Documents folder is a shortcut to the target folder location shown below." It also has a "Restore Default" button. Try that.

The location of My Documents is decided by a registry key called "Personal".
However run will look in the default place which is C:\Documents and Settings\user so if you have moved or deleted a folder from that place it will not show up, even if you have changed the registry.

I'm on Win2k3 server, and typing My Documents into the run window does nothing. I have not moved or renamed the My Documents folder.

Btw, to open control panel, I type 'control' in Run Window. I can also type 'Control Panel'! :)
But typing desktop doesn't do anything. It gives an error saying 'Windows can not find desktop'! ;)

"Control panel" works though. "Desktop" does not.
I just VNC'ed into my home XP Pro SP1 machine and "My Documents" works fine. At work we use Novell for authentication, so maybe Novell is screwing with 'my documents' and 'desktop', since those are user-specific.

You can always restart Explorer.
You can also expand environment variables-- %USEPROFILE% or %TEMP%

I just tried Win2k3 Server & Win 2000 server. Typed My Documents in the run window. Cannot find 'My'. Make sure it's spelled correctly blah blah.
Win2k Server is a clean install, with just the latest security updates.

For word, it's probably because it was "Word for Windows" a successor to Word for Dos.
Excel as near as I can tell was windows only.
MS Access was not originally bundled in Office.
In fact, I think only powerpoint (who's name is longer then the 8 character allowed in win 3.1) was created for Office. And the original Office was just a value bundling of "second tier" applications, Word 6.0, Excel 4.0, etc..
I got them originally cause they were cheap compared to Lotus and WordPerfect.

I'd guess that executable names derive from whoever had the job of creating the make/build. They tend to be 8.3 even in our more elastic times if for no other reason than its still easier to manipulate 8.3 at the console.

Wasn't Excel like the only app avilable for Windows 1 and 2?
I drooled over the Mac version of Excel while plugging away on Lotus 123 3.0 which could use like 4 megs of extended (or was that expanded? ;-) memory!

At least Microsoft has the sense to keep the executable name the same from one version to the next. I wrote code to integrate with one application and have had to modify it every time we've upgraded to a new version because they keep changing the name of the executable. They've also moved all the registry keys associated with the app to a new location for every new version as well.

Nope. In fact, Microsoft licensed Windows 2.x for distribution with applications. One such application was Aldus PageMaker. There were definitely other applications for Windows prior to 3.x, although it was really 3.0 that launched it into the big time for application development.
Windows 3.0 brought us resources (dialog boxes, icons, etc.). It also brought the first protected mode support.

ahh yes. Page maker and those other early windows apps....sSo long a go. Just a distant fog.
For many people it really was a Solitaire shell. But the apps started pouring in soon enough.
