A plea for email addresses

Just a side note -
For regular posters, could you please try to put email addresses in the "Email" box for your posts?

For those who aren't aware (and don't read or trust the little grey print), your email address is never exposed - anyone who clicks the link gets a form that FogCreek uses to forward emails to the poster; your address is only revealed if you choose to reply directly.

The reason I ask is the number of times I've wanted to make a side comment or clarification, or simply contact someone about something, but didn't have the option.

Just a friendly note from your Uncle Philo. :)

Just wondering.

I hope this isn't so unka Philo can take us aside and slap us on the wrists without embarrasing us in front of our cousins.

The upside of including your email address is that you get nice emails from Philo (...Don't think I have gotten one yet, what's the deal with that?...)

the downside is the nasty, lewd, and anonymous comments from people disagree with me. They generally say intelligent things like "Your dumb" or "Geek girls are excellent in bed"...What's with that?

But still I presist in using my email address, I keep holding out for the elusive email from Philo...one day it will happen, I am just biding my time....

Does the netiquette require answering to emails received off-board?

So, who got the email from Philo and what was that about? Cookies?

Aussie, don't call his bluff. You just never know......

I've had the same basic experience as Aussie Chick.  Filling in the "Email:" box will mostly result in rude, anonymous comments from idiots.

On the other hand, I've had a couple of interesting email exchanges (but none with Philo either!) that resulted from the email link so I leave it there for that.

Or maybe they will be used by the Microsoft Marketing Machine. Who does Philo work for now? Hmm... part of the vast conspiracy!

Philo emailed me once.  Called me a recycler.

The email on this post is fake

I remember trying to email Philo privately once, except that he was in the habit of using an old, obsolete email address.

I finally tracked down his real name and email at Microsoft, but by then I had forgotten what I had wanted to say.

Actually it wasn't an obsolete email address, it was a lesson in never letting a .org domain lapse, otherwise you have to teach the domain registrar how to reenable it.
(Apparently when .org's lapse, somehow they get a few "special" flags that have to be specifically removed. It was a mind-altering experience)

It's all better now. :-)

I've received a nasty e-mail or two, a handful from Phlio, and a few
other good ones.

Not that any of this matters, my contact info is on my website and if
you can't figure out what that is...

In any case, it's much better than revealing your e-mail address on Usenet.

People should put their email on their posts, otherwise Philo will be forced to randomly email someone later on and attribute the prior post to them. :-)  I got one such email that had something to do with Electrical Engineers or something (I think it might have been meant for Atkins).

I've only gotten one negative anonymous email from some wanker who was upset that I said that the whole outsourcing discussion was done like last years thanksgiving dinner. Another interesting email was a form "why open source is the world's evil" from John when he believed that we were kin after we argued a common perspective in an open source discussion.

Man, I *do* have massive problems with attributing concepts/quotes to the wrong people. Over the last year or so I've been working hard to verify who said what and when, but old habits (post now, think later) die hard.

Sorry about that. :)

Occasionally I get mail.  Recently I had one offering to have Christianity explained to me, I refused, politely I hope.

And no Philo's never emailed me either and nor has Aussie chick, so I guess that's one electronic dance I'll miss as well.

I don't email people unless I feel it is too off topic for the msg board.

As for the nasty emails, well I don't understand those, I mean, if you believe what you are saying and can say it with some intelligence, then post it to the msg board, emailling a nasty message to me just tells me that you know you are wrong and are too gutless to post it where everybody can see it and roll there eyes.

You want nasty emails, make a comment that might be considered to reflect on Macs occasionally.

i once posted on Dvorak's forum that I thought it wasn't very bright of Steve Jobs to try and sell macines without floppy disks in countries where they were the most common form of storage.

It was quite interesting to see what they suggested I did with sand, sheikhs and camels.

How come I never get rude, anonymous comments from idiots. I tried so hard.

Idiots never send rude anonymous comments to their own kind; they feel a kind of primeval solidarity.

And clever people feel don't need anomymity to be rude, as you can see here :)

The only two people to ever email me off this board are Bella and Joel.

I can't tell you what the email I got from Joel said (he promised to do a number six on me if I did :)

Bella however was warning me about the ills of going 48+ hours with no sleep! Quite touching to see the human side of Bella
