Nick Bradbury Interview

There's an interview with Nick Bradbury, creator of excellent software such as HomeSite, TopStyle and now FeedDemon:  http://www.since1968.com/archives/000058.php

Thanks for the link.  Good to see that desktop development is still going strong.  Nick Bradbury creates great tools.  I've always found them to have a clean, professional interface and rock solid.  I use HomeSite, Top Style and look forward to using FeedDemon.  On a side note,  he developed these tools in Delphi.

I am a huge fan of HomeSite and TopStyle. They are excellent tools.

I also don't want to troll, but...

The problem is, I can't understand the importance, or the marketability, of a RSS news feeder.

I don't understand why it's a "serious" need, one that would make people pay cash to get software.

I shall definitely be buying a copy of FeedDemon (I'm using the free trial right now) for the simple reason that my time is valuable to me and it saves me time. I can stay up to date on a whole bunch of sites without having to visit them all using my browser.

I second John's post, and I personally find Feedeamon to be the best RSS reader out there.

I shall try it, too, then.

However, I don't understand how time can be valuable to someone who reads not one, but several blogs and sites.

I regularly read about 2 sites, and this is a major time sink for me which I try to reduce.

Your implication seems to be that reading blogs is a waste of time. Of course there is a lot of chaff out there but I certainly don't think that's the case for the ones I choose to read.

Also, RSS isn't just about blogs. Many news sites have feeds now (for example).

I try very hard to stop reading blogs and web sites because they bring me little value.

I tried FeedDemon - pretty good software.

One of the things I like about Feed Demon is that it's very easy to set up "search channels" that search a large collection of feeds for a particular keyword or phrase. That definitely saves me time, because there are certain topics that I like to track, and FeedDemon lets me do that. It pulls together stories from blogs and established news sources so I can see what's new or being discussed in my specialized field.

There are lots of good uses for search channels. There's a guy at Macromedia who has a search channel set up for the products he works on, so he can see what people are saying about them. On blogs, he often responds to comments and engages in discussions; a nice touch.

You can also set up a search channel for your own name, to see what people might be saying about you behind your back.
