Joel Ripoff?
As reported on /. there is this new article:
http://www.neilgunton.com/rewrites_harmful/
Doesn't cite Joel but is very much in his spirit ... only very bad IMHO. It certainly reads like a clumsy ripoff.

astonishing though it seems, an idea can be thought of and written about by more than one person without being a 'ripoff'
best not to think of Joel as 'the font of all knowledge', try thinking about him as just this guy, you know?

"just this guy, you know?" sounds a lot like a quote from a certain novel that MarkTAW thought you might be referencing. I wondered the same thing. :-)

I _was_ referencing it.
<g> but obviously Im a lesser level geek than you two, I had no idea what that characters name was. (actually I was having trouble remembering which book of the series it came from, but I think Ive got that now)
it was zaphods head shrinker, talking to the media and earlier on talking to that big ugly alien in the ship, right?
(ie, he said that more than once IIRC)

Most of the things Joel has written about were used, known or written about long before Joel wrote about them. For example, we have always used a daily build process.
Think of Joel as "that guy who has a knack for writing interesting commentary about software development." His programmers paradise ads call him a "software development guru." As if programming guru's didn't exist before.
Basically Joel's established a great marketing campaign for his products. Would he write articles if it weren't for his benefit? Nope. In fact he now writes for Programmers Paradise. Of course there's more to the deal there than just marketing but i'm sure both sides benefit. You scratch my back I'll scratch yours.
It's marketing. It attracts people. People are the key to the bottom line. The bottom line is money.
I personally don't go crazy over Joel's products. His articles are ok. They're fun to read but don't take them as the final word.

<shrug> of course you do, so do many others. Luckily that doesn't prohibit me, or you, or anyone else from participating in the debate outselves.

You people have got to be kidding me.
A lot of Joel's most popular articles are decades-old software engineering concepts. They're like essays you had to write in class.
That doesn't take anything away from Joel, but it makes me realize I've been ascribing a higher talent level to the discuss.fogcreek posters.

<looking at you like you're a moron>
While I enjoy Joel's articles, there's nothing particularly NEW in them. Joel is not the first one to write about doing code rewrites, or to take the stand that you shouldn't do them. Hence, that guy isn't ripping Joel off.

maybe because it was badly made, incoherently written and about as clear as mud?

Sorry. You are right, I'll try not to assume that my readers have the same education (MSCS) and experience (12 yrs) that I do. :)
I didn't make that point very clear, though Sgt. Sausage managed to pick up on it.

"I'll try not to assume that my readers have the same education (MSCS) and experience (12 yrs) that I do. :)"
wow, thats genuinely condescending and arrogant, congratulations :) takes some people years of academia to master that.
Neither my level of education or my experience (neither of which you have any knowledge of) had anything to do with my ability to 'grok' the point your post was trying to make.
<g> some programmers get better with experience and some merely grow more complicated and harder to understand...you are clearly one of the latter group :)

Sebastian Wagner,
Didn't you know that we were all poor hapless damsels in software distress until Joel arrived on the scene?
I am very thankful for his contributions to the software community and benefit very much from his insights. But that does not mean that he has some lock box on software common sense...

condescending, arrogant, and now cutesy.
interesting to see how you react under even an incredibly small amount of pressure, you must be a real joy to work with.
gods I prefer to have discussions with _intelligent_ people instead of well-educated ones.
(ok, ok, its possible to be both and many people are, but theres no doubt that merely being well educated without the intelligence leads to nothing but character flaws)

Not exactly ;)
I don't quite see why people think I'm a fanboy, I'm not. The one thing I think Joel on Software (though he maybe wasn't the first to say it) is known for it's "Don't Rewrite. Ever."
I also think the article I linked to is very not as well-written. That's it.
