NBOR, "revolutionary" software, arrives today?
Has anyone else here been awaiting the release of the NBOR/Blackspace player on January 15? There's been some hype about this software akin to the early Segway rumours--it's going to change the world, etc. I'm intrigued after reading through the website http://www.nbor.com (even though they used a horrible font for headings). But, dang it, it's the 15th and nothing is available, yet!

It's a scam just like everything else. People trying to make money by creating a lot of hype. Your advertisement... err... I mean post was incredibly lame.
Thursday, January 15, 2004
I can't believe someone can fill whole website with talk about nothing. They talk and talk and talk about nothing. There's never a definitive statement about the end result of the product nor is there any proof that the thing even exists or will exist. Lame. Stupid marketing stunt.

I assure you that my post was not an advertisement. I am skeptical, too.

Gambit #231 in the Guerrilla Marketeer's Handbook
If I could put this in italics I would...
Visit tangentially connected chat and discussion forums and drop the name of the product and URL casually and ask rhetorically if its all hype, or are _they_ just blowing smoke?
NB. May be combined with gambit #24, slightly mispelling the product name.

In two weeks I'll develop a cheap knock-off to NBOR developed in Delphi.
Stage 1: write clone.
Stage 2: ?
Stage 3: PROFIT!
I just need to get the gnome voice down and I'll have it made.

That *is* interesting: of the 10 "different" results displayed by Google news (which excludes the other 60 results that Google describes as "very similar") there are 7 entries which begin like this:
"The software, called 'No Boundaries Or Rules,' or NBOR, includes an intuitive user interface for writing, drawing, compiling multimedia presentations and ..."
I hadn't realised that the so-obviously self-promotional press releases that companies put out are so widely (and so verbatimly) reprinted by the media.

Actually it sounds like the 'digital lego' product in the Microsofties book.
Ok, your Gambit #19 worked, persist, persist, persist and give links to other links about the links you gave in the first place, but linked.

You see, we all have heard of and seen stealth marketing wherein some shill pumps up his product with seemingly innocent questions posed to discussion groups. So anything that looks even remotely like a stealth ad is going to get lambasted.
The only way your innocent inquirey can be taken seriously is to begin in a totally negative tone. Oh wait, then some other stealth marketing shill could lambaste you for being negative and get in a free ad at our expense with his positive assessment.
So start out as positive and take the flack and have the negativity make itself look bad, then bring in another shill to support your position and he gets in the free ad.
No wait, we're on to that also...

I'd never heard of NBOR or Blackspace before reading this thread. But one comment caught my eye in a linked article:
"Blackspace is a fundamental change in how we learn, work, play, and communicate," says John Seely Brown, former Chief Scientist of Xerox Corporation and director of its Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), "as great as the advent of motion pictures. It is not just a new software paradigm, but a new, active, and interactive [medium]."
Damn, that's a good reference!

Another one caught my eye:
"We need to say here that the magic of NBOR software is not just what you can do ... "
Any software that describes itself as being 'magic' scares me.
Be afraid ...

From the website:
"The free NBOR Player will be released this evening
(1/15/04) Pacific Time."
Love how the time zone is specified, but the actual time is "evening" ;)

PC Magazine have a short article about it: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1435099,00.asp
Seems underwhelming.
The hype reminds me of http://www.zomb.com, however. You can do ANYTHING at Zombo.com!

Actually, what's lame is watching a posse of Idiot Clown Geek Police start to wail and moan about "marketing" when someone posts up a message about an actual product that several people who know better than they think is intriguing and interesting.

I was involved in the beta testing. its just about the crappiest product Ive ever seen, basically they make everything into a 3d thingie and force you to interact with it through that.
Not a bad idea, who would have thought that it would turn out to be such a painful experience.
(for instance, imagine creating a text document using a 3d editor.....see any benefits??)
About the only good thing I can say about it is that the application itself goes from running to quit in approx 3 secs when so instructed...almost fast enough to satisfy me.
oh god it burns

<snip>Then you draw a yellow arrow that intersects your address book and points to the blue star. Your address book disappears and the blue star becomes filled so you can tell that something has been assigned to it. You can now delete the blue star and forget about it. Then later when you want your address book, just draw a blue star, touch it and your address book will reappear instantly, ready to use. You can draw this blue star at any time, anywhere in Blackspace and the result will always be the same - touch it and your address book will immediately appear.
Anything that you can create in Blackspace can be assigned to any object recognized by NBOR. For example, you could create a 50-page document complete with pictures, diagrams, Dyomations, slideshows, animated films and the like - then assign it to an object, like a green circle. You could then delete the circle and later (like a week later), when you need the document, you can draw the green circle, touch it, and your 50-page document will appear ready to be printed or modified.
</snip>
I have to say, this is so funny:
"you could then delete the circle, and later (like a week later)...." or like a month later, or like whenever you like...
But seriously, I can't imagine how this would have anything more then novelty value, still the novelty value would be enough to get me to have a go of the demo if I was bored one afternoon, it sounds fun.

I can just see myself drawing all these different shapes of different colors, trying to remember what one corresponds to my checkbook. Finally just opening the desk drawer and writing the check out by hand.

Ive _nearly_ used it as well...their service is absolutely awful though, and dont expect a refund when you point out that their software doesn't work and is just plain crap.
Im assured that the idea is revolutionary, but the software is a buggy and shitty as anything Ive ever used.
I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't the fact that the company allows morons to work in its support department.

add another person with problems. turns out that their help was written by a monkey with a bad memory and poor grasp of grammar.
the biggest problem IMO is that the images and graphics are rendered _very_ poorly, in the age of MacOSX to show us all how good graphics can be, this program harks back to an older era of pixelated images and skewed rotations.

one of the kids of a friend of mine was involved in the recent testing. A bunch of them were forced to use it over a decent period of time.
my friends kid slowly went blind while using it.
Now, Im not saying that its the fault of NOBR, but its an interesting coincidence if you ask me.
just be careful, thats all Im saying...too many blue stars may turn you blind..

Why doesn't NBOR give up on marketing the software and just sell what they were smoking when they designed it?

It's extremely annoying to read a fairly straightforward topic in which someone mentions an issue or a problem, mentions a tool or service they're using they find useful or interesting, then have members of the Idiot Clown Geek Policie come riding up squeaking endlessly about "marketing." One hopes that after the zits clean up, they learn to bathe, and women accept them for dates they'll have something better to do than whine incessantly about marketing.

NBOR is the stupidest piece of shit I have ever seen. And trying to charge $300 for a piece of crap? A two-year-old monkey on a typewriter could write it. Well, you idiots who wrote it, tell your boss to stop paying freaking people and schools to buy your fucking program.
P.S. After spending 2 hours downloading the freaking player, it wouldn't even open (beta testing anyone)
P.P.S. I sure as hell hope some hacker cracks it so everyone can use it and CRASH THE INTERNET! It's better than paying $300!
