Windows 2000 Shutdown

Why would Windows 2k Professional take a minute or more to shutdown?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop which displays the "Windows is shutting down" or "Saving your settings" splash screens for 20 or 30 seconds or more when shutting down. This is after I have manually closed all applications.

I also have use of a Dell Optiplex GX150 at a client which can close applications automatically and shutdown much, much faster.

Any idea what could be going on?

If the applications won't close, then it's because they're not responding to WM_QUERYENDSESSION Windows sends when Windows is shutting down. As for the "Shutting down windows" message, this could be because a service won't terminate?

Is it shutting down completely or is it hibernating to disk? Have you checked the event log for any errors?

Thanks John & Old-Timer.

The Application Event log showed these entries when shutting down:

"Windows cannot unload your registry file.  If you have a roaming profile, your settings are not replicated. Contact your administrator.

DETAIL - Access is denied. , Build number ((2195)). "

and I fixed it by installing SP4. The time that the "Saving your settings" message displayed went from 40 seconds to about 1 second.

Excellent! Thanks again.

This reminds me of the times I worked at a certain company.

They treated me badly because I was a student and worked part-time, altough I was more competent than their regular employees.

So, I treated them the same: when there was time to go home, I would say to my coworkers: "Emergency shutdown!", and then hit the power switch.

This was because, if Windows was messed badly, you got to spend an entire day reinstalling everything.
