Im sorta a newbie when it comes to programming. I know a bit of html and a good deal of perl, and im learning vlog right now. But anyways, what did you all think of this movie? Im not by any means a hacker to trying to be 1, im just curious if the stuff in the movie is realistic or not?
The movie was completely unrealistic.
Nothing like the movies... not that I'm a hacker, but c'mon hollywood makes everything more glamorous.
... anyone in a major movie. I'm sure there's some student film out there where all the tech geek stuff is totally accurate.
Well at least they got the sort of personality, notion of social engineering, and such right in Sneakers, even if they didn't do incredibly good at making things realistic.
The movie was good eye candy and had an ok soundtrack. The only realistic scene was when they pulled out the different colored books. That's about it.
Java would be a good language to learn. It's used fairly widely in industry, and you can leverage what you learn to do other interesting stuff like JSP web pages.
Actually, depending on where you work, Hackers may be absolutely realistic. There's definitely a certain element of hard-edged macho programmers who push the limits, and are fairly extreme in their attitudes and behavior -- and also wear funky, hacker-looking clothing.
"Actually, depending on where you work, Hackers may be absolutely realistic."
Oh yeah that's absolutely true. Angelina also works there.
The movie to watch is "Office Space"
No no, Hackers is much more accurate than Office Space. And everyone looks like in the movies, your friends are just uglier than average.
Read "Masters of Deception: The Gang That Ruled Cyberspace" by Michelle Slatalla and Joshua Quittner.
I hate movies about computers. They drive me nuts because I just know to much to be sucked into the story.
I was just kidding in my post up above. My life in no way resembles "Hackers."
Get this! At my office we have Hawaiian shirt Friday! HAHAHAHAHAH!!!
Oh come on now.... I thought The Net and Swordfish were very realistic!
Come on, in "Hacker" they double Angelina's laptop CPU power by typing something on the keyboard.
"Hackers 2: Operation Takedown" is quite good though, it's about Mitnick and has absolutely nothing to do with "Hackers" - I think people just got used to saying "Hackers 2", it's not official.
The movie Antitrust was actually the first time I started kinda liking Microsoft. I was so pissed Sun would stoop that low. Someone else agreed when I got him to watch. (And I made sure not to say my opinion before asking his.)
Oh yeah the mitnick movie. I missed that when it was in theaters. I should rent that.
Check out startup.com or that netscape movie for documentaries about the insides of software companies. Both of those companies were completely borked process-wise, and that seems about normal in the industry, so those two movies should be good examples of many other real world companies.
