Software Development in Australia

Is anyone aware of a list or register of Australian software development companies ?

Also are there are experienced Australian programmers who could share their observations of the technology world in Aus.

I have been out of uni for a year and a half and am a little bit shocked at the low level of techie nouse out there in the business world.

"Systems integration", configuring multiple software systems to work together seems to viewed as a real high tech activity.

Probably the easiest way to find a list of Australian IT companies is to just check the Yellow Pages.

The IT situation in Australia is pretty dire at the moment.

matthew - dire as in "can't get a job to save your life" or "the industry will collapse if they don't get programmers"?

i suspect the first, but figured i'd make sure...

The IT industry in Australia is hurting at the moment. There are wide spread reports of not enough jobs to go around.

The Australian economy is strong, and should avoid most of the pitfalls hitting the rest of the world. However, many companies are cutting back on IT after having to spend on Y2K, and then GST implementation.

Yes dire as in "can't get a job to save your life".

Here's some articles you might like to read:,7237,4758361%5E15301%5E%5Enbv%5E,00.html,7204,4665583%5e15306%5e%5enbv%5e,00.html

If you want to keep up to date with jobs check Tuesday's edition of the Australian newspaper, there is a reasonable IT suppliment in it.

I don't think the situation is any different any where right now in the World. Will still have way too many people in the IT industry, and at least another 500,000 or more jobs still has to be shed (or leave the industry, depending on how you look at this!).

IBM just 3 days ago announced 16,000 are to be laid off.

The link:

As mentioned, there are lot of companies that have a ton more to shed. I think by next summer, most of the layoffs should stop. The real problem is that we still need a large exodus of people from IT right now, and many of the people do not want to leave.

We need more than just layoffs, since those people laid off are now still in the job pool.  A exodus means that those people *change, and move OUT of IT. This is a *much* different concept then just a layoff.

Until their Wives, and/or their savings run out on them, we still have another year. These people have to *leave* the industry before the job situation will improve. Hence, we are getting the layoffs right now, but only after about a year or so when people LEAVE the industry will the job situation improve.

I wrote a article on jobs in the IT industry over a year ago. You can read my comments at:

If you're competitive, Australia is a good place to work and you don't have to worry. The unique reason is that because many white Australian are lazy. You can find at most company, the one that work hardest are immigrants Aussie, they work longer hours and usually are more dilligent.

Yes, us white westerners are all lazy good for nothing lay abouts.

Finally the secret is out and we can step aside and let the more diligent lead the way.

Lead on! We shall follow.

Probably the biggest indicator for me of the slump in IT was the reduction in the size of the IT supplements for the Age and The Australian - without the job ads they have gone to 1/3 of their previous size.

I am going to put together a list of Australian Software Development companies.

If anyone knows of any existing lists or is interested in helping put it together let me know.
