Reading TopSpeed Datafiles without ODBC?

I have a rather large dataset that I need to chug through on a regular basis to produce detailed payroll reporting.  I own the TopSpeed ODBC Drivers, and using them I run between 8 and 10 minutes to produce the report.

I get this same *blistering* performance even when the data files are on my local computer.  Has anyone had any success, outside the ODBC drivers, accessing data stored in TPS files?

First of all, a dataset has huge overhead. Always use a DataReader for fastest results. Secondly, forgive my ignorance, but what are TPS files? And I'm wondering what TopSpeed ODBC drivers are. .NET uses OLE DB drivers, which in my experience, are much better than ODBC. Why not use the OLEDB provider?
