We have an application written in .Net using the compact framework.  We are proposing some upgrades to the application and are getting pushback becuase we are not using a Java technology.  So I have been tasked with researching what is out there.

Has anyone used j2me or one of teh variants on a pocket pc device?  What are your experiences?

It's been a while, so my information may be a little out of date. MS stopped developing their run-time long ago in beta, so that would be out of the question. There are commercial 3rd party run-times available for the Pocket PC. Just do a search.

But, I personally dont like the idea of using Java on a Pocket PC just because someone likes Java.

Well, I have a somewhat complex application on .NET CF, and its very fine.
I use bar code scanner, image scanner for photo and label printing. After all, I send everything on a wireless GPRS session.

It works fine. About J2ME, I'm sorry, but I cant help.
