"ResourcePool is not supported" exception

I was wondering if anyone has seen this and/or can throw some light. Here's the error message I get - very rarely and
inconsistently - when trying to open a SqlConnection:

System.PlatformNotSupportedException: 'ResourcePool' is not supported on the current platform.
  at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.Open()

The code is in a C# assembly executed on the web server (IIS5.0, Win2K); tha database is SQL 2000.

A quick search didn't turn up anything except for a suggestion to install the latest MDAC (I have 2.7).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Little bit more meat in this one perhaps:

Also seeded to be suggestions of using impersonation to connect to SQL might be causing probs - if you are, try a plain "UID=x;PWD=y" (ie, "trusted connection=false").

Thanks, this gives me a couple of directions to look in.
