Your own OS

Hey Joel,

I know you have a lot of hangups about Linux, so why don't you make your own OS (maybe based on Linux) that would bring usability to the forefront? I think that the key to making an OS work is to pair it up with a limited hardware set at first (demonstrated by Apple). Would you ever consider building your own OS?

I don't think I could summon the resources it would take to write my own OS, even if it were based on Linux. Writing a modern and useful OS is on the par with sending a manned mission to the moon: thousands of developers working for a decade or two.

Do you have to rebuild an OS to improve usability?

I think that qualifies as rhetoric.

As Apple proved:  No.  They did not rebuild NeXT, they just built upon it and made it much better.

They also spent quite a few years doing it.  Even OS X.3 is still "not there yet", as there is SO much more they can do.
