How does this forum work?

These forums are very nice, I like the simplicity and elegance of the design.

How are these forums handled? How are they merged with the rest of the site? Is there an article somewhere about the working of these forums (back-end, technologies involved, etc.)

They're ASP-based and use Access or SQL Server on the backend (not sure which).

If I read the "Building Communities" right, this thread should go *poof* very soon...

Oh well, I'll use the search feature first next time, I promise.

Forgot to mention that I've written a clone using JSPs/Java talking to an Oracle backend but I have no intention of making it public! It was a learning exercise.

I'm writing one right now using Delphi's WebBroker technology and a Firebird back-end. In fact, it's my "learning project" for WebBroker.

It's working pretty nicely right now, with most of the essential functionality present. I can even remove selected replies from a topic, which doesn't seem to be possible with the above ASP version.

I'm running it on Apache for Windows as an Apache Loadable module; and it should be easily retargetable to IIS, OmniHTTP and even Apache on Linux (using Kylix).

A nice thing about WebBroker is that I've manager to completely separate the code from the HTML. I've got a bunch of templates (with special tags in them) that can be edited with any HTML editor. So I can change the look of the site without having to recompile.

I might make it available if there's any interest for it... I just need to polish a few roughspots first.

I'm running Phorum on my site and I find it to be very similar to the JOS/Fog Creek forums.

I just created it a few weeks ago, so I lost all the old posts.

Thanks for the link to the building communities thingy... I know he talked about it on JOS but said he'd only send it to people on his mailing list or something.

Oh yeah, desipite the URL, that's the forum for - is hosted on a server that has no scripting like PHP and no database like MySQL.

Okay, I know I'm the only one adding to this thread, but I recently changed hosts & prosoundreview should switch over any day now...

This is my new forum:

A PHP / MySQL version of a forum very similar to Joel's:

I tried the JohnsAdventures version and it's very similar. The only problem is, just like all JOS, articles scroll off the bottom eventually. Only... there's no search mechanism.

Other than that, I liked it a lot.

I'm very partial to simple implementations of things... I don't like a lot of un-needed and un-used fatures. IMHO I think they clutter things and get in the way of the actual discussion.
