Directing visitors to the right error page

I have 1 domain with 3 distinct sites on distinct subjects, but I have only one 404 page: 404 errors anywhere on the domain go to 1 main error page in the root. This is fine for the main site but not for the 2 sub-sites.

One solution would be to create 3 links on that main error page, one to each site, but we don’t want to confuse visitors from one site with links to the other sites.

The best solution seems to find a way to redirect visitors from these sub-sites from that main error page to a custom error page I would create in their main folder.
Is there a way to figure out on the main error page from where, i.e. which folder, the visitor came?
Has someone a solution, perhaps another one?

Entirely server dependent. Usually you can by checking the URL, for instance in PHP or ASP.

Thanks Adriaan. But I should add that I'm probably best described as an rather advanced user and not a programmer: I can get around a bit in html, but have no knowledge of PHP, ASP or that kind of scripts/languages.
