CityDesk Add-on Utility

Well, we've been blithely talking for months now about how CityDesk can be extended because it uses an open file format. I don't REALLY have time to work on this, but:

That's a small VB application that does two things:

(1) It will show you all of the "never publish before" and "never publish after" dates from your CityDesk file
(2) It will let you browse for a file on your hard drive, specify other things like author and headline, and blast the file into your CityDesk site.

Number (2) is ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS. If you click the Import button without having backed up your CityDesk file you are a DAMNED FOOL. I think it's working, but I explicitly make NO guarantees.

Copy Boy is a Visual Basic application that depends on the VB runtime and on the Windows common controls. You probably already have those on your computer. If you download it and it doesn't work for you, and you really want to try it out, let me know and I'll build a real setup program for it. That (along with some other missing things, like help and documentation) will probably be along presently.

Please note that Copy Boy is copyrighted software. It is NOT open source and it is NOT intended to remain freeware. This message gives you explicit permission to download, use, and redistribute version 0.1.x of CopyBoy.exe, without waiving my rights on future versions.

I'd be happy to take bug reports or feature requests on this thread. No guarantee as to when I'll get around to anything. But if nothing else, I hope this primes the pump for third-party CityDesk applications.

If you don't have VB installed, you may want to try the setup package at instead of the straight .exe download. Unzip to a temporary folder and run setup.exe.

It works.  I imported a text file and an HTML file and made a few comments about the process:

Note that tk also had to install MDAC 2.5 to get it all working...I'll check into versioning there in the next round. Should be able to work with the same MDAC that CityDesk itself depends on, I think.

New version 0.1.4 adds support for bulk changes to CD authorship information - for example, you can update the "About the Author" field for every article by John Doe in a single operation.

New version 0.1.5 adds the ability to undelete a deleted CityDesk article. It also fixes a couple of bugs, including one that could prevent it from opening some CityDesk files.

Version 0.1.10 is now available. This version adds the ability to edit the names under which CD will publish your articles. This equates to the ability to shoot yourself in the foot, so please be careful.

Im getting "3265: Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal" errors while trying to import any text file.

Any ideas what could be going wrong

thanks in advance

No immediate idea...but I'm sure we can sort it out:

1) What version of CB are you using?
2) Is there anything in the CD file before you try the import?
3) What's the caption of the dialog box reporting the error?
4) What are you filling in for the various blanks on the Import tab?

Feel free to e-mail me directly to chase this.

After a long delay (well, OK, a week) I just uploaded 0.1.14. This one fixes another few tiny bugs, and adds the ability to import all templates from one CityDesk file to another.
