Hen Puzzle The answer to this puzzle is wrong. Figuring that it took 36 hours for 1.5 hens to lay 1.5 eggs is fine, but that makes an average of 1 egg per hen per day. The answer to the question is that if 1.5 hens can lay 1.5 eggs in 1.5 days, how many hens does it take to lay 6 eggs in 6 days is "1". Robert Kelly Thursday, April 24, 2003 Perhaps the "half" thing is mistaking you, so lets rephrase it: "if two hens lay two eggs in two days, how many hens does it take to lay eight eggs in eight days?" The hens each lay one egg, taking two days each (they're doing it simultaneously). Therefore, it would take one hen to get one egg in two days. But that same hen would only lay four eggs in eight days, so we would need 2 of them (1.5 in the original problem) Or mathematically, (1.5 / 1.5) / 1.5 == 1 / 1.5, an average of 1 egg per hen per 1.5 days.
