It all rather depends on what affordable means to you.  But don't count out Brooklyn.  Their are lots of nice parts of Brooklyn.  Park Slope and Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill have a nice mix of the character of the Village but more family friendly.  And if those are too expensive for you, start radiating out from there.

Try looking at http://newyork.craigslist.org/

Also, try going to neighborhoods that interest you and just look at flyers people have put up on lamp posts and such, especially in outer borough neigborhoods.  Much of Brooklyn is a faster and more convenient commute to downtown than much of Manhattan, and you get a lot more for your money.

How can you mention brooklyn in the context of "not manhattan" and fail to mention Williamsburg?

I tend to split brooklyn into old brooklyn - not trendy, grew up here, parents live here, and new brooklyn - trendy, just moved here, parents live in another state.
