Alpha Blended Icon Source

I am graphically challenged.

Can you point me to:
- Free sources of beautifully alpha blended icons.
- How to create them.

For example, I found this package:
http://www.devcomponents.com/iconpack/

How do you make these?

Look, these are made by pros. You are probably not a graphician to do this. Your question is something like "how Ferrari makes those cool engines, how can I do the same?".

. . . or, perhaps, an answer like:

http://www.iconconstructor.com
Seems to do a "good enough" job from any photo source.

What a stupid icon software. It's a shame what sw developers spend their time on.

Do a google for "Create XP Icons" and one of the top hits should be the official article from Microsoft that walks you through step-by-step. It was written by the peoploe who did the actual XP icons, and they share their tools and techniques.

This software has been pretty good in the past. I haven't tried Creation, though, but judging from their previous apps it might be worth checking out. (I might check it out myself soon.)

The freeware program IconEdit32 ( http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,4016,00.asp ) was a great little tool for making icons for Win98. I don't know if the icon format has changed for WinXP. But it's worth a try.

Look like IconEdit is going to cost me $5.97 - not a lot, but hardly freeware, more like subscriberware.

Skip step 1 as you seem to know how to drive already.
Step 2 above leads to at least one free alpha blended icon editor. Try it.
Step 3 iterates. Try poltroon.
