Recommended website validation app/script?

I've been looking around for a solid application or script that will, given a root URL, recursively crawl through all of the links on the site and check for bad links.  Bonus features would include automatic HTML/XHTML validation, etc.

I know there's tons of these sorts of tools around, which is mostly why I'm asking for recommendations -- there's so much junk out there, I'm tired of downloading weekend projects and half-finished scripts that don't work very well.  I could whip up something like this myself in a reasonable amount of time, but surely there's a killer tool out there that's reliable and effective.

BTW, I would absolutely prefer something that isn't platform-specific.  That would include perl or python scripts, java apps, etc.  If that's a no-go, I'll just suck it up and deal with doing all my website validation on a windows box.

The W3C has online tools that will do this:

And yes, there are tons of client-side tools with sophisticted link checking and HTML/CSS/etc. validation capabilities, but off the top of my head I can't think of any that are cross-platform.
