Web App: Clickable Floorplan with Office Info

Hi folks,

It's kinda hard to give the subject a meaningful title, but I don't think I did too badly. Apologies if this is not an appopriate place to ask this quesion - I should get away with it though as the range of topics covered in here is huge....

My rather-large company is looking for a system to track office space and what sort of work goes on in each office - they're looking for a web application showing e.g. a clickable floorplan that will detail who occupies a room, what work goes on in there, etc.

Before I sit down and build it from the ground up,  I was wondering if any readers have a similar tool in their organization, or perhaps know of an open source solution that can be modified for their needs?

It's not web-based, but what about using Visio?

I have seen one that used VRML to do a 3d walk through one that you could browse etc.

From what i have heard every organisation that has tried to install it has failed miserably and gone back to printouts from visio.

Sorry I can't provide a link to it.

These guys might have something you can use.

Don't be put off by the presence of Dutch on their website. They all speak better English than what I does.

Something similar to this might do it for you (written in Python). Kind of a touching story as well.

If I read your request properly, I have done something similar.

We had a need to know when people were in/out of the office so the receptionist knew when to take a message.  I know, voice-mail solves this, but for some reason that is not an option.

I cannot post the link, cause it is currently in use, but it is a simple asp app that has an image of the buiding floor plan and each office turns red if someone is out, or green if they are in.  There is also a side table listing all employ names along with their "in/out" status that is customizable.

Something like this could be done for you but by clicking on an office in the floor plan could pull up the info on that office.

Just my thoughts.

Our company had an internal application that was the internal directory, where each entry also contained a map of the office, with a big 'X' over where you sat.  Very convenient.

There's a Visio SDK that lets you embed Visio as a fully-functional OCX and/or create .Net plugins for Visio shape sheets.

We might be of some assistance for you. My company , Suite75, develops flashbased planningtools like interactive floorplans. Our solutions are not open source and there is always some customization involved but with our reusable components we can build a tool for your scenario in a relative short timespan.

I will put some links in this message and send you some more by mail that give a better idea of the tools we are building. Some of them are in Dutch but I hope you'll figure them out anyhow.

Kind regards,
