Each to their own but I think I'd have refused the offer of playing the game on basic principles similar to 'You don't play with their deck'.

But then this is common sense rather than understanding in any way the mathematical rules behind partitioning.

Interviews in general are tough, some are fair, some are not, most are subjective and dumb luck. Best thing to do is be as prepared as possible, and project your true self, the rest is close to a crapshoot. Important thing is to not let unsuccessful interviews affect your ego too much.
