Rave: Modern operating systems

Just finished my first run through of this book by Tanenbaum and have to speak up.  This is probably one of the best books tech books I have ever read.  It has in-depth, low level, explanations of subjects that every engineer should know:

- Process & threads, deadlocks, race conditions
- I/O (including windowing systems)
- Security
- Unix and Windows 2000 inner workings
- OS design

There is a slight bias towards Unix/Linux but I found it extremely relevant.

Tanembaum has a bias toward Linux for sure, but not for UNIX.

I think you've all missed the point a bit.

Main point: the book is great.

Minor point: A lot of the explanations are from a *ix perspective, with an indication on how they're different in Windows.

_You_'ve missed the point, which is that Tanenbaum and Linus aren't the best pals in the world after the big fight they got into ten years ago. Hence the replies you got :-)

The "Tanenbaum-Torvalds Debate" is obsolete!

Andy Tanenbaum, 20 May 2004:
"Also, Linus and I are not "enemies" or anything like that. I met him once and he seemed like a nice friendly, smart guy. My only regret is that he didn't develop Linux based on the microkernel technology of MINIX."

of course this book is towards unix, the majority of OS are unixoides as well as MINIX , Tannenbaums own teaching OS

Fred,

You're an idiot.  The point is that the book is very good, and I recommend it.

The rest doesn't matter in this context.
