Do software franchises work?

This is probably a dumb question but would a software franchise work?  Each franchise would sell only to a specific area?  Did Gateway have franchises or were they just Gateway owned stores?

I don't understand how you're using "franchise" in this context.

Do you mean that each franchisee would be SELLING the software, but only in thier designated territory?

If so, that sounds like a [Value Added] Reseller. That option makes sense if there is a lot of effort in selling your software. (E.g., my brother in law sells very expensive medical records software. Someone can't just try it out and buy it. It needs to be demo'd, spec'd , etc. etc. ). That is a situation that benefits from this franchise arrangement.

This is exactly how MS sell their full retail price software (though I scarcely know anybody who actually buys it).

We use an essentially similar system to sell, and support, our software abroad. We call them 'distributors'.

Goldmine is sold via an authorized dealer system.
