Thomas: That's not what the article meant. The list you talk about was downloaded with the page. But what if you have 10M entries to search from, or if they're constantly changing?

There's no way to do that in a web client, yet. And if you ask me, I'm not so sure if it's a good idea. You can't write a web based Photoshop or AutoCad. The web apps should be kept very simple and easy to use.

For ASP.Net Developers there is dbcombo.net  http://www.dbcombo.net/Default.aspx  it gracefully degrades in Moz but really dances in ie.

Hey I was drunk when I wrote that :)

Anyway, the dbcombo is cool, I did not check what are doing, but If I remember right you can load an url into a CSS layer, and if that is right you can create such functionality. But as Joel says it is a bit slow.
But it is a solution for today.
