Looking for URLS of sites like this one

I like reading many of the topics that get raised here, but I really prefer posting & reading messages at sites that prevent active topics from rolling off of the board.

Do any generic software development discussion sites similar to JOS even exist?

Techrepublic.com, slashdot.org, and angrycoder.com are the only sites that I can think of that are somewhat similar to this one and it has been over two years since I have been able to log into the techrepublic.com web site from my home.

You could try the various groups on the ex-deja groups.  They are fully searchable and can be accessed through google (groups.google.com) and searched.  Start from comp.* and work your way down.

The beauty of this forum *is* that topics roll off the page. Else there would be screens full of boring old outsourcing vs salad cream threads.

Do you think that we should outsource the salad cream?

"You could try the various groups on the ex-deja groups."

Uh, do you mean "usenet"?

Thanks for the suggestion Furious George but the USENET newsgroup at groups.google.com really don't contain anything I am interested in following. The software engineering related newsgroups seem to be pretty dead while the agile software development newsgroups seem to be filled with religous zealots and slick salesmen posing as gurus.

If I may, what's this joke about salad cream, I've been wondering ever since.

Hi Sathyaish - since I was one of the guilty parties I'll explain.

Last year Joel was in Norway and made a joke about mayonnaise.  The UK contingent  picked it up and said they preferred salad cream (it's like mayonnaise but runnier and with more vinegar).  There followed a thread explaining salad cream in such great and tedious detail that someone suggested that merely mentioning it should end a thread.  Promptly every thread had references to salad cream, its use in sandwiches and some quite dreadful (and frankly quite dirty) jokes.

It was funny at the time.  We've stopped.  Promise.

It's a kind of variation on Godwin's Law.

I think Usenet has a lot of interesting information and it shows me that what I'm thinking of now was already posted in 1991 and answered.

Besides that the Usenet capabilities/Interface is a lot like JOS forum. That is if you forget people posting in HTML.

All right! I get it. And where's the thread with trite descriptions of salad cream that you mention?
