Speaking of password manager

In another thread someone raised the issue of how Opera was slow to implement a password manager.  I use Opera but don't use the password manager.  I think it is flawed.  It only asks if I want Opera to remember the password after I have submitted it but before it is accepted.  How do I know that I remembered the correct password at this point in the process?  Shouldn't it ask after the password is accepted?

Do other browser's password managers work this way?

Yes, and if you get it wrong and enter a new username/password combination it SHOULD replace the previous one.  Safari works this way, and I believe Firefox does as well.

IE also works this way.

I agree that this is a flaw.  Unfortunately, Mozilla and Firefox both follow this flawed behaviour.

Why is this a flaw?  How is the browser supposed to determine if the password was correct or not?

Good call.

Unless the browser knows what the intended result is (for success or failure), it can't determine if the password was accepted.

Unless you can get a bunch of sites to agree on how to do this, it's unlikely to happen.

You fill in a name and password.
You submit.
The next page comes up..whatever it is success or failure.
The browser pops up a dialog asking you if you want it to remember the username/password you previously submitted.
Because you can see whether or not yourt password was accepted, you know whether to say yes or no.
okay?

Amen.  I hate it when I'm guessing at one of my less frequently-used passwords, and IE asks if I want it to remember it for me.  How should I know?  I don't know if I've entered the right one yet.

Why not use an independent password manager, such as Password Safe? Then you are not dependent upon a browser or anything else.
