When you spend too much time with computers..

"Yes madam, that is correct. You will have to upgrade the download software before you can download the upgrade software"

reminds me of another one: "If you experience problems with your phone(line) please call our toll-free number..."

What about this one:

An ad in a leading newspaper:

"Are you illiterate? Can’t read and write? If so, write to us at [PO Box ...] and let us help you."

Seen at an opticians:

Customers are reminded that if they have not brought their contact lenses, we may not be able to see them.

A Compaq machine I set up many years ago had this introduction to using a PC it ran when the machine booted for the first time. It was really a very good introduction to Windows 3 computing - I'm sure it won some awards.

It began by showing you how to connect up all the cables...

Or sending an email letting everyone know that your email server is back up.

"Or sending an email letting everyone know that your email server is back up. "

Or better:

Sending an email to let eveyone know your email server is DOWN.

Or, classic, sending an email with instructions on how to open your new email account.

My least favorite: I had an MSN dialup account and the connection was down for several days.  Their help file said that if you were experiencing connection problems, go to their tech support web page. DOH!

It is quite coimmon to have to zip a self-extracting zip file. The reason is that .exe's are now routinely blocked by many serviers. I get messages tellling me the .exe is on a list of forbidden file types - please zip and resend (presumably so their ant-virus can't scan it!).

Stephen

Not quite sure why someone who has ability to unzip files would be doing trying to get pkunzip. :-) Classic chicken and egg problem. Unless they were upgrading or were using winzip before but all this spoils the humour.

Most antivirus software can scan within zip files too.

That's why I send all my viruses and spyware as password-protected .zips. Takes a bit more social engineering in the mail message to get the reader to deploy it; luckily, there's no shortage of idiots. :-)
