dev tools - small market

I heard from a lot of people that they do not recommend to start creating a software company to create dev tools. Erik?

I'm a developer and after 7 years of programming I'm very frustrated of the plumbing work and how uneasy to create applications that the company I work for do.

Yep, maybe I want another app builder tool, and I know how these work, usually it doesn't fit for all size and for all needs. Still, I think that with a decent tool I would be able to reduce my work from 2 months to 1 week, at least that would be my goal.

I'm thinking something similar that Deklarit or Webputty do, but for offline smart client and client-server scenario, with the ability to sync/merge databases.

Any comments?

As long as you will be the only consumer of your new dev tool, I don't have a problem with it :-)

I mean, every big software developer should have their own frameworks/libraries/IDEs/what have you.

If you can do that and still build something on top of it then it might be interesting.

Anything else may be a hard sale.

IMO, the safest market (at least in USA) is the small biz market, as long as MS isn't already meeting the particular need.  Forget developers !

Small biz has more money than consumers yet needs more reasonably-priced problem-solving software than their larger cousins(who can often solve these day-to-day issues inhouse).

As a side, at the same time with the app builder I want to build 3 separate products for 3 different fields, as it will prove for me that serious applications can be built with the tool.
