Open Source CRM?

Hello,

Our small band of programmers has been in the business of CRM sales and implementation for a CRM software vendor.  We have discovered a vertical niche for CRM that we think has some future promise.  (By CRM we mean contact management, with features like workflow, Outlook integration, etc.)

We'd use our current vendor, but they are dragging their feet on allowing us to create a version with a new interface , which would be necessary for this niche. (It's not like they are a big company like Peoplesoft or Microsoft, they are a small fry like us!)

Anyhow, the question I have is this:

Does anybody know of an "open source" base CRM package that we can use as a starting point to modify to fit our niche?

Do the licensing of these allow for modification and resale?

I'm new to these ideas and would really appreciate the insights of this wonderful group!

Here are a few open-source CRM projects. Outlook integration will be a problem with most, for this you could try http://www.opengroupware.org/

CRM would be a subset of this project, but you might be interested in the OpenACS project.

Hello,

Thanks for your replies so far, I'm looking into those links.

We're looking for a base product to modify and sell into the niche we've identified.

Thanks again, and if anybody has more ideas, I'd be happy to discuss in further detail.

another vote for OpenACS, http://openacs.org

Their CRM/Groupware subproject is called dotWRK and is based in part of the fairly successfull dotLRN for online schools.

Comiere is another one. Regularly at most popular project on sourceforge.

One more that I have seen, but not used is Open For Business

Liferay is yet another one

These last 3 might be overkill if all you want is basic CRM, but they are certainly worth a look.

You might also want to look at this article, and the accompanying comments

I've been reviewing these products, OPENACS is looking real good for what we are trying to accomplish.

There is some good stuff here, thanks.

It looks like I will have to quickly learn the Linux world, but that is a blessing, we will be completely free of the Microsoft stranglehold.  We want to ship opensource and don't want to spend a lot of time with licensing models, we have more of a service and maintenance business model.

Plus we want a completely browser based architecture and don't want to be tied to dot.net.
