Is it ok to join Orkut?

I haven't been invited, but I could arrange that when I wanted to.

What kind of information do they ask you while registering? Beside advertisements and spam, what are the evil effects of joining this community?

I have butterflies in my stomach and what it means is that I suspect I am going to get flamed.

Just saw Mark's post now a few threads down below. Another good site to watch out for Google is http://WatchingGoogleLikeAHawk.com from the creators of Watching Microsoft Like a Hawk.

This may be of interest, the conversation in the comments is good too, where he says he has even refused to sign internal microsoft policies because he does not agree with them.

A sure change from the "just press 'I agree'" mentality.

Orkut members launch Orkut Paranoia community about Orkut TOS on Orkut

http://boingboing.net/2004_02_01_archive.html#107646700265616627

Hey, Aussie, that is scary, isn't it? Do you think Microsoft Passport is doing that already? I better make it a habit to read those Terms of Service/Agreement sections thoroughly.

What other info do they ask you at Orkut (although I am never gonna go near it)? I heard they have a long list of fields you must fill in before you register.

"Orkut members launch Orkut Paranoia community about Orkut TOS on Orkut"

Poor fellas! Just like the Reliance cell phone subscribers in India. They're now charged a premium if they opt to exit.

I don't get it. What's the big deal with this Social Networking web sites? If I already have enough friends and not looking for a date what's the point in joining these sites?
If I need freinds on-line that badly, I always have JOS :)
Is there something I am missing here?

Anon, it's what happens when you get a few geeks that don't have a life and mix it with a little VC money.

*ducking*

;-}
Wednesday, February 11, 2004

LOL.
But why are all these people joining these sites? Is it just a fad?

Anon
Wednesday, February 11, 2004

Uh.... All they get is our email address, that they need to verify (i.e. your invitation). Anything else you can lie about up to and including your browser & IP address if you know how. The profile information - while presented as soon as you sign up - is all optional.

I already have 2 Orkut ID's... one "real" and one "fake." Did you know that you can be 8'11" tall in Orkut? Well the fake me is. That's almost 3 meters for most of the world.

The "real" me is in some programming, business, geographic, and music groups. The "fake" me is in some more shady groups, and I may even sign up for some fake geographical groups too just to throw off the averages (besides, I'm interested in travel, so it might be a fun way to learn about new places).

I don't see how Google made any money for the first few years of it's existance. I suspect it will be the same with Orkut.

no friends, still waiting for an invite
Wednesday, February 11, 2004

I invited approx 15-20 people, all of whom I know in meatspace. About 4 have accepted. I got two emails from JoS asking for invites, and I used my fake ID to accept.

I seriously doubt I'll stand out.

From that link above: God bless the subverter!

You can't just join Orkut.  You have to be "invited" by someone.  This is no "community" - it's a bunch of elitist crap.

"We're so cool that we don't let 'just anybody' come in".

I quit worrying about that nonsense in the 8th grade.

I love Orkut. I am an overweight, unattractive guy with almost no reallife friends. On Orkut, I am a ravishing bisexual woman who is into polyamory, polyf*ckery, paganism, unix, and any other sexual words I can think of.

I come onto guys left and right. I have over 1300 people as friends but not a single one knows my true identity. A little sweet talking and suggestions and I get the guys to send my checks to help out with poor little me's rent this month cos the bad landlord raised my rates, and my poor cat whiskers needs chemotherapy.

Last month alone I cleared over $8500.

Orkut ROCKS!

Have pity on the people whose 'social' interaction consists of spending yet MORE time on the PC.  It's really not too hard to go meet people in the flesh.

so true, it's not that I have any interest in being a member, or making use of whatever cool features that website has, its just that I want to be able to say that I am a member....Sad but True.

Hey, Imaginary Girlfriend. Are you that fartknocker who posted the imaginary girlfriends auctions on Ebay a few months ago?

("fartknocker" == someone doing something only slightly shadier than I would entertain doing... a title of mixed disgust and envy. ;-) )

Yeah I've run some IG auctions. ebay's clamping down on the practice and that was small change anyway.

We've got a whole community of artisans who are providing fictional companionship and drama for the right price. I play it pretty honest myself compared to some of the others who are actually women. This stuff started with the russian bride scam, but we've learned all those tricks. Some of those girl were taking guys for tens of thousands of dollars for 'visas' and 'lawyers' and stuff so they could 'be wit htehir beloved'. Me, I think that's unethical. I never take guys for more than they can afford and I never let it get personal. Once you get into the fake bride industry though it's as dangerous as the nigerian scams -- some poor guys that went to russia to meet their girl never return. A scam is one thing for a fat guy like me but kidnapping and murder is not part of it at all. Maybe after getting scammed by me, these guys will learn their lesson and then NOT go looking for some russian girl. Why, i am actually providing a needed service for this guys, educating them about scams as I am.

"Why, i am actually providing a needed service for this guys, educating them about scams as I am."

Just because it's costs the victims less doesn't make it any less fraudulent. Don't kid yourself - you're a scam artist. A small time, pretty pathetic little scam artist, but a scam artist nonetheless.

These auctions are worded pretty clearly that the object of the relationship is imaginary and that there's no chat, meetings, etc possible.

The idea of fronting something like this makes my skin crawl. I.G. can "have" his business. But that's why Harvey Fierstein and PeeWee Herman are where they are at and why I'm where I am at...

Hi,

There was something written in the Dutch media about orkut...a community not easy to join. Because the reporter of the article couldn't join, not much was written about it.

It's a little strange name for Dutch people..orkut, especially the last part "kut" has a vulgair sexual meaning, type in google "kut.nl" and you know exactly what I mean.

So my first thought was, that this is some secret kind of porn community, swapping all kinds of "what do I know?" for files. But it's not...

When checking the site I came not futher than the front door, already wondering where I had to pay by my paypal account to join but it isn't possible. They don't want my money? So what is the site exactly about, is it nice, is it a kind of standard php site with lots of text. Is it like google, "just search?" so for what?

I need an invitation to become a joiner.
I like to join, but how can I join if you don't know anyone who joins.
