Where's Bella?

I've been reading this forum for a few years now, but depending on school/work, I have missed a few weeks. Some time ago, Bella stopped posting regularly (or even semi-regularly), but I never saw anything that indicated why. I know he flared a lot of tempers, but I always got a kick out of his posts. In my opinion, Bella made this forum a must-read. Right now, it's still good, but let's be frank... it was a lot more interesting back in the day.

So... what gives?

He finally dissapeared up his own a-hole.

I don't know, but Bella's last few posts were rather humanizing. Here's one thread I remember him being active in.

Bella's still here. He never stopped posting under his other names. Check the Web DNA traces to make the connections.

Web DNA? OK, I'm there:

http://www.usabilitymustdie.com/jos/WW_DNA.html

How the heck is this supposed to be used to correlate identities? It displays the posting frequency on a graph where the X axis is the day of the month.

If you just go by the 'shape' of someone's DNA, Joel himself "looks" a lot like Bella...

Bella's posts in most cases spot on, you might not like them but hey....

Web DNA is fun. Though if you change your ID by a single character it throws everything off.

Yo, Bella, where you at, dog?! Holla back!

Bella made millions on the JoS forum in the past year (anyone with half a brain could) and has retired.

What the heck is a "Bella?"  I been reading this forum for a while, and I don't recall any Bella ever posting here.  Was he a no-talent ass-clown?

No, Bella obviously has a great deal of talent and zero tolerance for those who did not, but he was extremely negative and often offensive.

Bella usually played several roles in graduated degrees of obnoxiousness: gadfly; "suffer no fools" curmudgeon; toughlove-gone-nazi "coach".

Many times I've silently agreed with the ultimate point of his rants, but he tended to attack fairly inoffensive and relatively clueful people with zeal and abandon because they didn't share his priorities or did not share the big picture to which he laid claim. I usually read this stuff as having much more to do with Bella's internal demons than with the other poster's need for "reality".

I've worked around quite a few programmers and *very* many engineers like Bella. It's a typical "bitter high level experienced technical guy who flies off the handle with hardly any provocation" schtick.

I always imagined Michael Douglas in "falling down" frantically typing in Bella's posts.

Hmm. I always assumed that Bella was just a pseudonym that people used when they wanted to abrasively say something controvertial and didn't want it associated with their usual handle. I know I've done that.

I mean, I know that there was somebody who originally used the handle, but I thought that it had passed into general usage as a bit of JoS forum convention.

Will the real Bella please stand up?

Conversely, Alyosha` is the pseudonym when someone wants to say something really STUPID but doesn't want their real identity attached to it.

Yeah - just like everyone uses "Philo" when they want to post something insightful and witty.

Come on - you don't think *I* do all this stuff, do you?

Could we make a list of the different approved pseudonyms so I know which ones I am supposed to use.

I miss Bella.

Yeah, he was a first-class jerk most of the time, but admit it...He was entertaining!

I'm sure Joel could tell us who everyone is with an SQL statement, as I'd bet that IP addresses are recorded when you post.  I'm glad he doesn't.

Bella siting (Nov. 13):

Doesn't prove anything, but either he's alive and well and just got sick of /bored with us, or the AI program that implements his online personality can only post to one forum a week. LOL (ok, that was uncalled for. I suck.)

I thought Zone Alarm gave you a spoofed IP address so people couldn't keep track of you.

Glad to see there is a small cadre of people here who appreciated the "in your face"/"back to basics"/"KISS"/"Common sense"  *core values* of my maniacal postings, despite their audacious tone.  For the record, I have only posted under "Bella".  I do recall someone else posting as "Bella", but that was brief.

I haven't posted much b/c
a) I've been somewhat busy.
b)  I've mostly said all I ever wanted to say about IT.      If you look thru my posting history, the topics I participated in generally dealt with career management, quality of life, the "age discrimination" excuse, and inflated IT salaries.

If anyone cares to maintain correspondence outside of JOS, feel free to e-mail me at jos_bella@hotmail.com  and I'll throw you into my address book.  I comment maniacally on many things outside of programming

I do like Bored Bystander's postings, he's a sharp guy... but, I am not the "militant tekkie" I portray on JOS.  Actually, at work, I am quite friendly & agreeable , and in fact, have made many personal friendships that have long outlasted our tenures at the place we worked together. I still visit people I worked w/ back in 1997, and still e-mail people I stopped working with in 1995.

Bella,  I find it VERY hard to believe that you've said all that there is to say about IT and technology employment. After all, there's still a lot of people out there about to f*** up their careers or their lives whom you need to call on it. ;-)

And I didn't doubt for a second that your meatspace demeanor was considerably different than your internet behavior. You're still alive, after all. :-)

PS: actually, I agree with your impatience in many situations. I'm just reluctant to flame someone I don't know with very good reason because I don't know where they are in their lives. Most advice is pretty conditional...

So I was right, Bella did retire.

This is in line with his "I never do anything without a good reason" style of posting. I.e. - "it's not that I got a life and don't spend as much time in loser forms as I used to, but that I made a deliberate decision to stop posting once I got everything out of JoS that I had intended to get out of it." As if he came here with an exit strategy in mind.

This is by far the funniest set of postings I've read in a long time - I came across a post on.... don't remember now, there was some 'classic' Bella [and I thought Bella was female, because I've know a couple of Bella's - both female ;)] - any who...

I then became intrigued in a reply by Joe SixPack which ultimately made me type in Bella in the search box on the page.

What followed was a listing of Bella posts, of which this was one.

You all are hilarious in your conclusions and suppositions, and commend you all. Obviously (now I'm asking for it) you all are intelligent, and this 'search' for Bella was brilliant.

Thanks for cheering up an almost miserable day at the orifice (office) and helping me attain that balance that tekkies generally have no idea aboot (Canadian pronounciation).

Muchas Grassy Ass and thanks for the entertainment!
