RFID device based Applications... any takers ?

Hi,

Quite a number of people are claiming that the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) devices are the next big thing. IBM seems to have invested a lot it.

But, is anyone of you or anyone you know working on designing any such applications like Integrating RFID devices with SCM, CRM, ERP applications for the real world ?

Also, what do you think is the future for this technology and if it will be practically feasible to use them in real world apps like SCM and ERP ?

I had considered it strongly but decided against it because
there isn't yet the technology to read very cheap tags
from a distance, which is the area i wanted to be in.

It is an interesting field though with interesting problems.
Consider everything in the world, down to the smallest
part, capable of being in a database and being programmed
with autonomous actions.  Cool from a technology point
of view.

Good place to start is http://www.rfidjournal.com/.

I did some work for a company at http://www.freedompay.com which uses RFID technology similar to Mobil Speedpass for payment systems.  They have embedded these devices into fob's and mini-credit-cards.  The goal is for these to be used primarily for small purchases like gas, video rentals, vending machine purchases, etc.

The lack of a serious safe executing platform and networking platform in mobile computing will never allow the wet dream of having billions of users broadcast their GPS whereabouts (plus elevation and direction) to relational marketing opportunity. It will take a lot of infrastructure and a lot of years of maturation. So I don't know how long you have to wait before fetching that pulse of RFID from a block away.

Marketing purposes (data mining). You could drive around a neighborhood and find out exactly what people have.
