VDSL deployment

Anyone live in cities where >10Mbps DSL is being deployed? Bell Canada has some trial runs in Toronto, but nothing major. It's pretty big in South Korea and Japan at the moment.

Obviously we won't be seeing it in the US anytime soon, seeing as how we're the telecommunications third world...

... as are we in the UK, unfortunately. It seems that having a pre-exisiting infrastructure gives telecommunication companies  an excuse to not push forward developments as "there is no need as customers are satisfied with what they have"...

I think once it becomes common for ISPs and Cohosts to offer gigabit networks instead of 100Mbps (for about the same price), we'll have a last mile upgrade in the States. Because what are you going to do with a 10Mbps when you don't have a fast server to download from.

There is 0 incentive for the incumbent telco (owner of the local loop) to make DSL competitive with leased lines. Even if you can get the speed form a company with it's own DSLAM's, will you get the SLA's to match? It is still the incumbent that will be servicing the copper.
