How do you mean? Can you start of by breaking these problems into two? How do you wish to rename files/folders? How do you wish to control this remotely (are you forced to use FTP)? What's in your way?

If you have a rule, like change all *.htm files to *.html or *.asp.. what you could do is write a script in Perl using the FTP module.. the FTP module will let you traverse through the ftp folders recursively.. and you can take all the filenames in turn and translate them using ftp rename commands.

maybe cUrl ( http://curl.haxx.se/ ) can help.

Excellent at odd batch network transfers.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wininet/wininet/ftp_sessions.asp

I believe you want to look at the link above, it leads to the WinINet API that has FTP capabilities such as FtpRenameFile().

Incidentally, a 30 second search on the MSDN Tech library for FTP returned this in the top 3 results.
