It's nowhere near as good, but the best that I've found is Visual Studio with Visual Assist 6.0 installed.

Does anyone know how visual slickedit compares? I've heard amazingly good stuff about it, but never used either.

Visual SlickEdit is a great tool once you set it up & customize it to your personal preferences.  Unfortunately for me, it's lacking in the C#/ .NET department, so I haven't upgraded to version 8.  But for Java/C++, I wouldn't use anything else (including IntelliJ IDEA), but that's just me... ;-)

I'll second the C++ Builder vote. I've used Visual Studio and C++ Builder, and there's no question which is the better IDE and which is more capable of building a good GUI app. If you need rapid GUI development, C++ Builder has the Microsoft tools beat.  It made Visual Basic look hard (and bad).

If you don't need GUI app development, by the way, you might want to look at the free Dev-C++ IDE at http://www.bloodshet.net

Great tool with low overhead and the price is right.
