$2550 per desktop for Linux?

Joel writes:

I'm curious to know where he got the $2550 per desktop for LINUX from. Linux distributions are a hundred bucks maybe, and all the regular business apps are included in it. If he's talking about existing apps, they're already licenced and paid for. So where's the extra 2 grand coming from?

Joel?

There has been a discussion on this for about a week in this thread: http://discuss.fogcreek.com/joelonsoftware/default.asp?cmd=show&ixPost=57265

It's for training, support, software, you name it...

There's a lot more to any project then just the software cost.

In my experience, that 2k comes from tearing your hair out trying to compile various libraries that other libraries depend on in order so that you can get a library to work that your program depends on, then trying to work out whether all the compiler warnings are to be ignored or not =).

Yep and it costs more than $2k but you do it once, then you just dup.

Maybe it includes the actual desks.

Special Linux desks, with their own built in iceberg and pool to keep the penguins happy, maybe ;-)
