Fault Injection Software

Can anyone recommend good software fo Fault Injection based software testing?

We would like to simulate faults on the system as part of our testing process.  For example, we would like to test what happens if the network temporarly goes down without actually yanking the cable from the back of the PC.  We would also like to test with various memory configurations without opening the test PC's and adding and removing memory.

Thanks,

Get a decent hammer. Needs little maintenance, proliferation is sustained, high usability, marginal cost.

That's a hardware-only solution, of course.

What OS? For Unix, you may be able to just drop interface w/ ifconfig, for that one.

You didn't mention the platform. If it's Windows, try searching http://msdn.microsoft.com for the word "stress".

VMware might be worth a look. I think you can limit the memory available and unplug the simulated network as required. Fortunately you don't have to rely on my hazy memory -- it was a few months ago I used it, and only briefly at that -- because there's a demo version from their web site:

Try Holodeck from http://www.sisecure.com/holodeck/holodeck-trial.html

It's a pretty cool and comprehensive tool. You can get a free trial version.

I just ask the guy 3 cubes down to fix a bug.  He's so big he's gotta be pretty soft, and he will definately inject faults into the code for me.

Seriously, it depends.  I typically have a shell/perl script monitoring the system, when certain things happen the script does something nasty.  For example, when the code creates user foo in the database the script might go in and change the name to bar.  Of course, to do this you need a very good understanding of what your normal tests are doing.

My platform is *nix, not Windows, YMMV.
