Google for public FTP sites?

Years ago I ran across a search engine for publicly accessible FTP sites.  Enter a filename and the thing would tell you where to find it via FTP.

Does anyone know what I might have used or what I should use to do this now?

Thanks ...

There used to be a really good one that sadly I can't remember the name of now.  You could try the ones here: http://www.ftpsearchengines.com/ though.

It was called Archie, and unless I'm mistaken, it died about the same time the rest of the good 'ol Internet did.

to find file.exe search for this in google:

I think the service you are talking about is
http://oth.net/

It used to be good. very fast and very clean. It was really cool. No adverts before google. The qualit of the links fell though, because everyone was running ratio ftps... upload 5Mb worth of stuff before you can download.

I have not used them in a few years though.

Another really good one is
http://alltheweb.com/

They are like google, and you can search for audio, ftp files, news, pictures video.

You can search for files. View others in the same directory. Quite a neat interface.

> "index of /" file.exe

I cleaned that up a bit:

"index of" apache server file.exe

Google seems to ignore the slash, so it turns up any page with "index of" on it, which is a fairly common phrase. So by adding "apache" and "server" you narrow it down.
