Good Icon Sets For Applications?

How do you all get good-looking icon sets for your applications?  Do you use the standard icons provided in Visual Studio?  Do you make your own?  Do you hire out to have them custom made?  Do you purchase pre-made icon sets?

I ask because one of the projects I'm involved with is at the "fit-and-polish" stage, and we still haven't decided on whether to make, hire or buy for button icons.

You can find freeware (even for commercial use) icon libraries on the internet. Some are quite polished and way above average.

Personally, I try to create my own. It's not that hard and you can achieve very acceptable results with a modest graphics package and an icon tool.

My preferred icon tool is Axialis AxIcons from:
http://www.axialis.com

For icon libraries you might like to try:

http://www.deskmod.com

and

http://www.guistuff.com

Both have links to icon libraries, and deskmod carries samples with screenshots.

Its one of the things I hate when developing, if I don't have an artist resource, to even get close to a reasonable icon for some elements.

All the standard stuff is generally easy, though the style should be consistent.  Its the icons for application specific stuff that usually bang me over the head.

Coincidentally, I was trying to come up with an icon for a generic 'Description' dialog (for all those squirrelly categories, types and status type descriptions).  My first attempt at a brass plate was horrible, today I'm going to find a luggage label.

I also use Axialis.

Both http://www.glyfz.com and http://www.glyfx.com have tons of images for use in applications. They both also do custom work, and are not too expensive.
