Progamming graphical designers

Does anyone know how you go about making a graphical designer of the type found say in Visio or SQL Server's view designer? In other words defined pictorial representations of some type that you can link by definable properties?

It doesn't have to be complicated, just I've never done this sort of work before and need somewhere to start looking for either or both information and techniques.

I happen to browse along this open source MYSQL database design and modelling tool today:
http://www.fabforce.net/dbdesigner4/

Still need to check it out, but looks like a nice start for a GPL database designer. You might to check out the source code.

There are a lot of really cool controls on the net that you can purchase to do this kind of stuff.

Check out:

I have not used the above, but it does have some nice screen shots.
