Personally, I prefer to use a software that runs on my PC, and upload files myself through FTP or let the software do it for me.

- Userland Radio (don't like it, but it's very powerful)
- FogCreek CityDesk
- GreyMatter
- MoveableType
- a bunch of others

There are a ton of weblog services and software packages out there. Browse around my page at http://www.larkfarm.com/wlm/roll_your_own.htm - I try to maintain a pretty comprehensive list there.

It's always more fun to roll your own than to use someone else's :-)

CityDesk + free ISP (e.g., Hypermart.net).

CityDesk is free upto 50 pages. Radio Userland 7, if you can get hold of it, is free and pretty powerful -- the version they are currently selling was once called Radio 7.1.

Speaking of fun rolling your own, I just spent a few hours tinkering with a Perl MSN IM client... the result was the most minimalistic possible weblog system: the instant messenger weblog! Laugh at it here:

Frontier 5 is available for download here:
http://www.scripting.com/frontier5/downloads/

I never really understood it, it seemed so complex esp. compared to CityDesk, but if it works for you... The documentation wasn't particularly good either.

ps - I tried frontier months before I tried CityDesk, so the comparison goes from Frontier to CityDesk not the other way around.

that about sums up my experience with frontier. Don't you have to pay for Radio? Some sort of hosting charge (you can't use your own web space).
