Shareware Authors

Does anyone know of good (and still alive) mailing discussion lists for shareware authors? Shareware authors around here are welcome to post tips and advice. I am finishing up my first shareware program, a personal finance/budget system, and don't know exactly what are the next steps after the program is done - easy part. Am I beging unreasonable on planning to make a living off shareware?

Join the ASP at http://www.asp-shareware.com you will find tons of useful information and news groups.

Expect it to take a long time before you can earn a living doing it.

Euro-Share is a nice mailing list for shareware authors. They also have an online archive of past discussions where you can find valuable information.

Yes, you can.

Develop a good app.
Give away a nearly full functioning version.
Make it *easy* to buy the full functioning version.
Charge a reasonable price (example: 5,000 customers of a $30 product = $150k).

Mauricio,

Niche products have a lot more chance in the shareware market than screensavers, games, video and music player, etc.
Usefeul advice: Give customers good technical support, allow refunds, put a forum on your site, write an easy-to-read documentation, avoid the nag screen in the beginning of the trial period (start displaying it after a week for example)...

Read also the referenced URLs in the following post: http://discuss.fogcreek.com/joelonsoftware/default.asp?cmd=show&ixPost=18721&ixReplies=5 .

Good luck.
