pay per use hardware??

looks like IBM is joining the pay per use bandwagon, http://discuss.fogcreek.com/joelonsoftware/default.asp?cmd=show&ixPost=18292&ix  but this time for hardware.

Here is a link to the announcement.

Does anyone here think it will work??

(ps. I know it is on slashdot, but the quality of discussion here is way better)

This is new?  There is something familiar sounding about it.

I sort of thought that's how IBM has been charging for their mainframes since the beginning of time. I don't entirely get it. I think it's one of those abstractions-that's-so-high-up-it-doesn't-make-sense-any-more.

I think the "new" idea is to connect the hardware, and not how they bill for it. The example given in the article is GM needing more processing power than is available on their own system. In that case, they could access the underutilized portions of other IBM systems. The analogy is a power grid. If one powerplant can't produce all the energy a city needs, then it can draw power from a second powerplant.

It sounds like a great way to make more money. Nobody will complain about that background process that's hogging all the CPU -- the system will automatically transfer work to someone else's computer. And IBM can change for the extra CPU cycles. Maybe process monitors should be changed to give stats in $ instead of % CPU!

That sort of assumes that CPU cycles are a scarce resource, which hasn't been true since the 1950s.

There are clearly apps which will benefit from this computing model.  IBM is positioning itself for when the market turns up.  I assume it's a very very early announcement to gauge customer reaction.

Obvously, they're not expecting everyone to render Duke Nukem frames over the net, or every child to have a nondeterministic algorithm set.

>>> Maybe process monitors should be changed to give stats in $ instead of % CPU! <<<

Maybe I have been around this business too long.  Not so much because I remember when that's about how it was done, but because there are now people around who think this is a new thing.

Back in the good old days of time sharing, when you logged off you would get a report that gave CPU use (seconds), I/O operations, memory used, and whatever else they charged for, the total charge for the session and how much money was left in your account.

The problem here is the title of the thread.  The networking scheme might have some new features.

Joel, processing power is a scarce resource when you move beyond the desktop.  Hell, Doom 3 and Longhorn will probably make it a scarce resource on the desktop again.

All the world is not Excel and FogBugz.
