How to disable Flash in IE I hate Flash intros - is there any way to stop Internet Explorer from running them?
Colin Davies
If I'm not mistaken, IE considers flash an Active X and if you disable Active X it should disable flash....

I don't have Flash installed on my machine. Whenever IE asks me whether I want to download and install it, I press the "no thank you very much" button.

I finally tracked this down:

but if you unregister the Flash Player ActiveX control, you'll get an annoying "Do you want you to download Flash?" message box on any web page that uses Flash. I think that's much worse than any Flash ads..

Advertisers really have gotten obnoxious with those flash adds though. Especially the ones you can't close until 10 seconds into the ad that (a) starts invisible, and (b) scroll all over the page before popping up a close button.

You can use "No! Flash"

I have been drawing together solutions to the problem here:

i just wonder why you forward to a yahoo group and then deny access.

in the last year or so flash has become far more common as an advertising tool than anything else. I wanted a way to stop and start the plugin on demand. ii first settled on renaming the plugin so the browser couldn't find it, but this became laborious, so i wrote a desktop tool that renames the plugin back and forth. it works with every browser i've tried so far (although turning it off in IE requires closing your browser). anyway, it's free and open source, and you can download it here: http://www.jtedley.com

You can try IEFriend. It can disable/enable flash in realtime without restarting your browser. The position of flash located will be displayed blank. If you want to see the flash, you can temporarily enable flash by pressing "Ctrl".

i just installed "noflash" http://www.geocities.jp/baryonlee/noflash/

thanks god, "noflash" works good. I think it is a perfect one. Easy to use, and it's small(64k). I had disabled all the flash ad.

I wonder if there is a way to disable flash without having to use any third party software.

I'd like to find an easy way to turn it off/on, rather than filtering it out. I want the web page to be given a chance to realize I don't have the plugin and send me to their HTML version of the site, or replace the flash navigation with an HTML version. NoFlash does block the flash but doesn't enable the web site to correct for this. However, I also don't want that annoying popup asking me to install flash.

The tip to modify the registry works very well. Thanks a lot, I didn't want to install any software to accomplish this.

Create a file in Notepad called "disableflash.reg" with the 4 lines of text shown between the lines below.

Hi, my dad has a very slow 166mhz computer and a 56k connection. I'm trying to find ways to increase internet speed, so far NoFlash has accelerated Ie a lot. Do you have any other tips to increase speed on Internet Explorer on such an old computer. Thanks.
