Error sending mail... A error occured in the proto

Error sending mail to: johnm@mydomain.com A error occured in the protocol.

Two issues: (1) 'A error' should be 'An error'. (2) where's the log file that shows what the error was?

Usually this indicates connectivity problems between your server and the outgoing mail (SMTP) server you specified...

I don't think there's a log file. The best thing to do is follow the troubleshooting steps:
