Product using MSDE and Reporting Services?

Hi,

My next product stores its data in MSDE or SQL Server. It needs some reporting functionality. I can think of several solutions:
- Use Access for the reports
- Something like Crystal Reports
- Use Reporting Services. AFAIK it's free but I am not sure if it works with MSDE and also what other issues might come up.

Any recommendations?

Thx

Reporting services can access MSDE in order to create reports, but it does require a SQL Server 2000 server both for licensing purposes as well as a place to house a couple pf databases for its own use.

RS is only free if you run the web service on the same server as the licensed SQL Server. If you split the web service (presentation layer) from the database, you have to pay for an additional SQL Server license, even though you aren't running SQL Server on the web server itself.

Check out http://www.microsoft.com/sql/reporting/default.asp for more information.

Im also trying to find the right reporting solution without much luck.

I used Crystal Reports a while ago with Delphi and it was ok, not great, but ok. More recently I tried to get it working on my web app. It was all going well while designing the report but then I started get wierd errors when I was trying to bind datasets to the report. Things that would work one day were failing with obscure errors the next.

What seemed to be a nice simple, powerful solution quickly regressed into whole days just trying to get the dataset to bind without getting the blasted LoginException.

Moral of the story be wary of Crystal Reports....
